Konoha (or Konohagakure) means Village Hidden in the Leaves or literally Village Hidden by Tree Leaves. It’s one of the hidden villages in the Land of Fire and one of the Five Great Shinobi Countries.

The Hidden Leaf Village is known to be the strongest of all of the ninja villages. It is situated deep within a forest, encircled by large walls at the base of a large rock structure known as Hokage Rock. This massive rock, which is similar to the real world Mount Rushmore, has the faces of all of the villages previous leadership (known as “Hokage”) carved into it.

Prior to the formation of the hidden villages, a period known as the Warring States existed. Countries at this time were smaller and seemed to constantly be in conflict. And in order to carry out this conflict they would hire mercenary shinobi.

Among the hired mercenary clans, two ranked as the strongest: Uchiha and Senju. The history of these clans were a bloody one; as they had been fighting each other practically since their inception. Due to the dominance of these two clans among the other mercenary groups, if one country was to hire the Senju or Uchiha the other country would have to hire the other one in order to stand a chance of victory.

In an attempt to prevent the constant bloodshed, Hashirama Senju, the leader of the Senju clan, initiated a truce between the Uchiha clan, through his childhood friend, and at the time their leader, Madara Uchiha. Together they would go on to form the first shinobi village: The Hidden Leaf Village. And from their example, other clans would follow suit, creating the other hidden villages and therefore bringing an end to the Warring States Period.

The Senju Clan leader, Hashirama, had the unique ability to use wood techniques. And it was from this manipulation of wood that he created much of the initial infrastructure of Konoha Village. It was for deeds such as this along with his ideals that favored him with the public, who selected him to lead Hidden Leaf Village as its leader, Hokage. However, the leader of the Uchiha clan, Madara, wasn’t happy with this decision. Fearing that Hashirama would use his newly acquired status to one day oppress the Uchiha, he devised a plan to overthrow him. But when none of his fellow Uchiha clansmen would go along with pan, he decided to challenge Hashirama directly himself. Fighting in what’s today known to be the Valley of the End, Madara was believed to have been defeated by Hashirama and to have died.

After Madara’s defeat, the Nine-Tailed fox he had been manipulating with his sharingan to help in his fight against Hashirama was acquired by the Leaf Village. And in order to tame its enormous power, the Nine-Tails was then decided to be sealed within a selected individual from the Uzumaki clan. In an effort to further promote peace, Hashirama eventually acquired and bound most of the remaining tailed beasts. He then sold them off to other villages during the First Shinobi World War.

Unfortunately, during the First Shinobi World War that Hashirama died, and so the title of Hokage was passed on to his brother Tobirama who would become known the Second Hokage. Although Tobirama’s leadership would be short-lived, having been killed by Kinkaku during the same war. It was from this point that Hiruzen Sarutobi would be chosen as the Third Hokage — which is the Hokage present for the first portion of the Naruto series. Later in time, during the Third Shinobi World War, Minato was chosen by the Third to become the Fourth Hokage. Unfortunately, soon after Minato became Hokage his wife Kushina Uzumaki was kidnapped for the Nine-Tailed fox sealed inside her, and it was then used against the village to nearly destroy it. Overwhelmed by the Nine-tails power, Minato and Kushina both gave their lives to seal it within their only son, Naruto. As many ninja died defending the village from the Nine-Tails, in turn Naruto was blamed for being the vessel.
