Sunagakure literally means Village Hidden by Sand, which is the name of one of the Five Great Shinobi Countries in the Narutoverse. The Hidden Sand Village, like the Hidden Leaf, has a leader known as a Kage; in the case of the Sand, they are referred to as the Kazekage. The Hidden Sand has previously had four Kazekages before the current.

The history of the Sand Village started after the Warring States Period. It was the first Kazekage that overwhelmed the native desert shinobi by virtue of his incredible strength and unified them under his leadership.
