Rinnegan literally means Samsara eye. And it is known to be the most superior of the “Three Great Dojutsu” (the others being the Byakugan and Sharingan). The Rinnegan is so powerful that its legend states that in times of disorder an entity from the heavens will come forth and either become a God of Destruction, reducing the world to ruin, or a God of Creation, bringing calm to the world.

The first Rinnegan user on Earth was Hagoromo Otsutsuki; athough his mother was capable of using the Rinne Sharingan. It was through the power of the Rinnegan that Hagoromo defeated the Ten-Tails and saved the world, becoming known as the Sage of Six Paths. From here, he would go on to create ninshu which was the precursor to modern ninjustu.

One who isn’t born with the Rinnegan can achieve it through mixing Hagoromo’s chakra or that of his sons, Asura and Indra, with a sharingan user. However, Kabuto, with the knowledge of Orochimaru’s teachings and research, managed to create the Rinnegan by mixing the DNA of Senju and Uchiha. He achieved this by introducing Hashirama’s DNA into Madara’s body. Although this version of the Rinnegan isn’t as powerful as the original, due to it being an artificial copy.

The Rinnegan gives its user immense power. In fact, even an unskilled user who implants in themselves a Rinnegan will become exceptionally powerful.

One such powerful technique granted to one who possesses the Rinnegan is the Sage of Six Paths Technique, which allows its user to utilize the powers of the seven paths.

The Deva Path of the Rinnegan allows the user to use the power of repulsion and attraction. This force works on both objects and people. The ability does have some constraints, however, requiring a cooldown. The Deva Path also grants the Rinnegan user the ability to create the Chibaku Tensei, creating a large black sphere that absorbs the surrounding matter until a natural satellite is created.

Summoning forth the King of Hell is another powerful ability utilizing the Naraka Path. Here the Rinnegan user can see through the eyes of the King of Hell, because it too contains eyes of the Rinnegan. Additionally, it has the ability to extract souls and kill its targets based on a contingency: if they answer questions dishonestly. The King of Hell even appears to have the ability to restore the health of damaged beings, by taking them into its mouth and restoring them to a fully functional state.

Apart from the other four paths, the Rinnegan allows its user to maser any jutsu and utilize all five of the nature chakras. It can also see otherwise unseeable barriers and is the only dojutsu capable of translating text from the Six Path’s tablet.
