Sasuke was part of Konoha’s Team 7 along with Sakura and his best friend and rival, Naruto. Sasuke’s obsession with acquiring strength came at a heavy cost. As he is one of the few members of the Uchiha clan still alive, his mission early on in life was to kill his brother, Itachi, who slaughtered most of his clan. In time, his drive to kill his brother and avenge his clan leads to him defecting from his home village of Konoha, because he believes he can achieve greater power elsewhere.

On his quest for power above all else, Sasuke increasingly resorts to dangerous, often illegal means, which further increases his negative reputation with the hidden villages. In time, he is considered an international criminal.

It is only upon learning the real truth behind his brother’s murder along with the events that transpired during the Fourth Shinobi World war does Sasuke begin to change direction in life.

Sasuke is the son of Mikoto and Fugaku. He was named after Sasuke Sarutobi, who was a strong ninja from the Sarutobi clan. Early on, Sasuke had a very high opinion of his brother Itachi to the point of admiration. He would constantly watch Itachi train and hoped he could be as strong as him some day. Itachi, on the other hand, didn’t seem too interested in helping his brother get stronger, and was known to frequently poke his brother on the head and promise to train him some other time when Sasuke would ask.

Sasuke was always in the shadow of his older brother, because his skills seemed unmatchable even for someone as gifted as Sasuke. In the Konoha academy, Sasuke was the top of the class, breezing through the assignments. Although he still couldn’t match the rate at which Itachi had ascended during the same early periods of life. Because of this, Sasuke’s father gave Sasuke a lot less attention than his older brother. This only began to change once Itachi became increasingly more distant towards everyone else as well as when Sasuke was able to master the Great Fireball Technique in only a single week, impressing his father.

One monumental night after Sasuke returned home from training he found the littered bodies of his clansmen scattered throughout the streets. Upon returning home to tell his parents, he was confronted with none other than his brother Itachi standing before his dead parents. Itachi then proceeded to use his Tsukuyomi on Sasuke, in order to torment him by repeatedly showing him visions of the murdering of their parents. After claiming the reason for slaughtering their entire clan and parents was to test his own power, Itachi fled the village. However, before doing so he instructed Sasuke to hate him and seek revenge, and that only when he had “eyes like him” — the Mangekyou sharingan — to come and seek his revenge. Otherwise, Itachi stated that in Sasuke’s current state he wasn’t even worth the effort of killing. Following these events, Sasuke would spend the following days roaming the site of the massacre, spiraling in the torment and trauma of what he had experienced.

As Sasuke was now the only member of the Uchiha that had survived the massacre in Konoha, he would spend his time from this point forward mostly alone. And he would do as Itachi instructed; he would spend all of his time and energy focused on getting stronger. In the academy, he became very dedicated to his studies, ignoring any opportunity for friends or the attention of girls, solely focused on his one desire for revenge. One of his classmates, Naruto, would eventually become his friend, due to Naruto seeing Sasuke as a natural rival and constantly trying to ensure the could keep up with him. Sasuke felt a connection with Naruto because he was the only one his peers who was in a similar situation of knowing the pain of isolation and loneliness.
